7/8th grade math teacher
Lindsay Merrill
Lindsay Merrill has both Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Mathematics Education from Brigham Young University with a TESOL K-12 (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) minor. She has spent most of her career teaching developmental math at the community-college level and has also developed secondary-level mathematics curriculum. She is excited to teach secondary-level students and help them develop quantitative literacy and mathematical confidence they can take into their future schooling and their lives.
Lindsay loves to teach math by providing students with the chance to engage in productive struggle as they work individually, in small groups, and as a whole class. After spending her graduate school years working on a grant funded by the National Science Foundation that studied teachable moments during classroom discourse, Lindsay regularly teaches by identifying and building upon these teachable moments that occur during whole-class conversations. She is mindful of the precision of her own language and helps students learn to use precise mathematical language. She creates a learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and where mistakes are used as opportunities to better understand important mathematics. As a result of her thesis work during graduate school, Lindsay skillfully teaches students how to use mathematical “objects” like graphs and gestures to communicate mathematics in a way that supports English Learners’ use of English as they communicate mathematically.
Outside of the classroom, she and her husband Bryan are the parents of three boys. Her boys are all in Spanish-immersion school programs and Lindsay has been diligently studying Spanish on Duolingo for the last 4+ years. She looks forward to challenging herself to practice in-person Spanish more and is looking for opportunities to be pushed out of her comfort zone to improve. Her favorite creative outlets are cooking (and eating) and music (piano and singing). Lindsay also loves to read books and listen to audiobooks. She loves to exercise; her favorite form of self-care is weight lifting and doing HIIT workouts like Tabata.
